Rules for Self-Reliance

This year I was deeply inspired by Maha Abouelenein after attending her talk.

What truly stood out was watching Maha live out the principles she teaches. She wasn’t just talking about self-reliance; she was embodying it. Maha positioned herself for scrutiny but handled it with grace and clarity. She was generous with her time but firm with boundaries, ambitious yet patient, and willing to take risks and bet on herself—all while keeping the endgame in mind.

Here are Maha’s 7 Rules of Self-Reliance:

1. Stay Low, Keep Moving: Focus on progress, no matter the distractions.
2. Be a Value Creator: Add value in all you do.
3. Don’t Be a Waiter: Create your own opportunities.
4. Unlearn, Relearn, and Invest in Yourself: Adapt, grow, and continuously invest in your personal development.
5. Reputation is Currency: Your personal brand and reputation are priceless.
6. Be a Long-Term Player: Build relationships and trust over time.
7. Live with No Regrets: Make decisions that align with your values to avoid regrets.

Thank you, Maha. It was a pleasure to meet you and learn from you. I appreciate your commitment to entrepreneurship, positioning yourself for opportunity, and believing that what you offer can truly make a difference in the world. I share that mindset and am inspired to keep building on those values.

If you ever get the chance to hear her speak, make the time—it’s worth it. In a world filled with talkers, Maha is one worth listening to.
